Planting Trees - doing our bit to save our planet.
It started with the Exco members of Clover who launched their Going Green programme at the Clover Convention in April 2010 where well over 100 trees were given to Ebenezer Hannah Home in Ennerdale. Mama Shirley Merime was overwhelmed at being the lucky recipient of this amazing donation. The vast centre is situated in one of the most vulnerable regions of Gauteng where they get the worst storms and wind. “These trees are being planted around the children’s cluster homes and gardens and they will definitely shelter us from lightning and the harsh winds. Bless you all for this wonderful gestures, it means the world to us.” Says Mama Shirley. Prof Elain Vlok represented Clover at the handing over to Mama Shirley. “I am proud to be a part of Clover’s Going Green initiative. You can be sure that this gesture is the beginning of great things to come with Clover’s Going Green initiatives.” She says.
Keeping our community clean
Mama Florence of Botshabelo has come up with a wonderful idea that gets the whole community involved. They collect every bit of empty chip packets that they can find (whether it is Simba or Willards it does not matter). From these they make the most beautiful tinsel that is used for Christmas decorations. “We are always thinking of ways to use everyday rubbish into something that is sellable. This is also our way of recycling and keeping our community clean.” Says Mama Florence “Clover Mama Afrika is embarking on its own ‘Go Green’ projects. We are proud of our Mamas using their own initiative as well as working with us on doing our bit towards saving our planet. This is only the beginning ….watch this space.” Says Prof Elain Vlok, Clover Manager Corporate Services and Clover Mama Afrika Trust.
Saving electricity and educating the community
It was the educational TV with a Solar TV donated by Solar World SA through our partner ETV. This solar TV is being used by Mama Selestien in Ashbury and is benefiting the centre with great results. “When the battery is fully charged it gives you 4 hours per day for 4 days of viewing pleasure. The Sony Bravia flat screen TV comes with a DSTV decoder with limited channels and its all linked to solar panels on the roof, the more sun there is the longer the TV will work.” Says Mr Cooper, MD of Solar World SA. Mama Selestien invited children of the community, church leaders and other influential people of the community to the launch of the Solar TV. “We don’t need electricity to help the school going children with added value educational programmes that is available on the DSTV channels. This is one of the best things that happened to our centre for the community.” Says proud Mama Selestien |
