Budding Bafana Bafana or Bokke can replenish those protein reserves from their day box with these tasty vetkoek burgers. Control the kilojoules and fill them with a variety of their favourites. And mum, don't forget to pack a tub of Clover Danone Yoghurt for half-time!

Ingredients

180g (375ml) cake flour
60g (125ml) maize meal
25ml baking powder
3ml salt
50ml Clover butter
50ml Clover Danone Inkomazi
oil for deep-frying

Savoury filling suggestion

Save time and money with easy-to-freeze frikkadels. Keep your options open by splitting the mixture and making big burger patties as well as smaller meatballs

500g lean beef mince
1 onion, chopped
175ml NutriDay Plain Low Fat Yoghurt
2 bars Weet-bix, crushed
1x46g packet brown onion soup powder
50ml tomato sauce
25ml Worcestershire sauce
salt and pepper to taste
1 egg oil for frying

Variation: Substitute Weet-bix with 250 ml oatmeal

Preparation method
  • Sift dry ingredients together.
  • Rub in butter with fingertips until mixture resembles breadcrumbs.
  • Store in airtight container in the freezer until needed.
  • Add Inkomasi to mixture and combine.
  • Drop spoonfuls of mixture into hot oil and deep-fry until golden brown and done.
  • Drain on kitchen paper before filling with apricot jam or cubes of Elite Cheddar.

Savoury filling preparation

  • Combine all the ingredients and mix.
  • Shape into small balls and fry in oil until golden brown and done.
  • Pop one into a mini-vetkoek and top with Elite Cheddar, sliced tomato and lettuce.

Tip: If the older ones are looking for something different, put a dash of Thai chilli sauce on seasoned frikkadels and wrap them in lettuce leaves
