Heat the castor sugar, vanilla, anise seeds, cinnamon stick, cloves, orange rind, orange juice and water together in a heavy-based saucepan. Bring to the boil, reduce heat and allow to simmer uncovered until reduced by 2⁄3. Add the fruit and gently poach for 5 - 7 minutes. Remove from heat and allow to stand for 10 minutes. Allow to cool slightly.
Serve with a dollop of yoghurt.
