Preheat oven to 180°C and grease an ovenproof dish.
Peel and slice the potatoes into very thin slices.
Combine the melted butter, cream, garlic and salt and pepper in a bowl.
Add the potato slices to the butter mixture and toss to combine.
Layer the potatoes, including the butter and garlic mixture, into the ovenproof dish.
Pour the sour cream over the potatoes and scatter the cheese over the top.
Bake in the oven for 45 - 60 minutes or until the potatoes are tender and golden brown on top.
